A pivot or hinge structure integrated into the main body of an exoskeletal, e.g. orthotic device is described as well as methods for computer aided designing and making of these devices. Computer systems and software for carrying out the methods are also described. The integrated pivot or hinge structure has a specified axis of rotation, such as one coinciding or approximating with the natural rotation axis of the ankle, knee, elbow or any other relevant joint. Preferably the pivot or hinged structure is provided with a personalised resistance to rotation. The pivot or hinge structure is a pivot or hinge comprising at least two separate cylindrical parts that rotate with respect to each other, the axis of rotation being at the centre of the cylinder. The pivot or hinge can be placed to the optimal location and orientation in regard to the limb or anatomical features observed or measured from the patient thanks to the layered manufacturing technique. The range of motion can be structurally limited if needed. This enables more possibilities for adjustment when the exoskeletal device, e.g. orthotic device is fitted to the patient to ensure a better fit and functionality.

The torques at the first and second joints of a test subject are measured, which may be generated simultaneously by the coordinate action of the antagonistic mono- and bi-articular muscles. A hexagonal diagram of the output distribution is formulated on a plane formed by two axes corresponding to torques at the first and second joints as. Based on the diagram, the muscular force of the subject, changing through training, may accurately be evaluated, without the necessity of specifying the force of individual function-based muscles of praxis, even if the subject changes his or her position or joint angle. The torques at the first and second joints are measured, which are generated simultaneously by the coordinate action of the antagonistic mono- and bi-articular muscles. The muscular force of the bi-articular link mechanism of the subject is thus measured by the diagram.

A system and method are presented to provide assist to a user by means of an exoskeleton with a controller capable of making the exoskeleton display active impedance. The exoskeleton assists the user by reducing the muscle effort required by the user to move his or her extremities. In one embodiment, a single-degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) exoskeleton assists a user with single-joint movement using an active impedance controller. In another embodiment, a multiple-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) exoskeleton assists a user with multiple-joint movement using an active impedance controller.

Motion Analysis is used to classify or rate human capability in a physical domain via a minimized movement and data collection protocol producing a discreet, overall figure of merit of the selected physical capability. The minimal protocol is determined by data mining of a more extensive movement and data collection. Protocols are relevant in medical, sports and occupational applications. Kinematic, kinetic, body type, Electromyography (EMG), Ground Reactive Force (GRF), demographic, and psychological data are encompassed. Resulting protocols are capable of transforming raw data representing specific human motions into an objective rating of a skill or capability related to those motions.
