A system and method for a biological interface system that processes multicellular signals of a patient and controls one or more devices is disclosed. The system includes a sensor that detects the multicellular signals and a processing unit for producing the control signal based on the multicellular signals. The system further includes an automated configuration routine that is used to set or modify the value of one or more system configuration parameters.

The EEG Processing Unit comprises a semi-rigid framework which substantially conforms to the Patient’s head and supports a set of electrodes in predetermined loci on the Patient’s head to ensure proper electrode placement. The EEG Processing Unit includes automated connectivity determination apparatus which can use pressure-sensitive electrode placement ensuring proper contact with Patient’s scalp and also automatically verifies electrode placement via measurements of electrode impedance through automated impedance checking. Voltages generated by the electrodes are amplified and filtered before being transmitted to an analysis platform, which can be a Physician’s laptop computer system, either wirelessly or via a set of tethering wires. The EEG Processing Unit includes an automatic artifacting capability which identifies when there is sufficient clean data compiled in the testing session. This process automatically eliminates muscle- or other physical-artifact-related voltages. Clean data, which represents real brain voltages as opposed to muscle- or physical-artifact-related voltages, thereby are produced.

A wearable action-assist device includes a biosignal detection unit detecting a biosignal from a wearer, an action-assist wearing tool having a drive source supplying a torque acting on the wearer around each joint of the wearer as an axis of rotation, a control unit controlling the drive source to generate the torque according to the detected biosignal, a drive torque estimation unit estimating a drive torque generated by the drive source, a joint-angle detecting unit detecting an angular displacement of the joint, and a parameter identification unit identifying kinetics parameters concerned by substituting the estimated drive torque and the detected angular displacement into an equation of motion of an entire system including kinetics parameters intrinsic to the wearer. The control unit is configured to control the drive source according to a predetermined control method based on the equation of motion into which the identified parameters are substituted.

The present invention relates to an exoskeleton interface apparatus that parallels human arm motion and is comprised of a serial assemblage of five powered linkages and joints based at a rigid support structure worn on the torso of the human subject. Such apparatus generates shoulder rotation using three orthogonal revolute joints mounted on serial linkages encompassing and intersecting at the anatomical glenohumeral joint. Elevation of the shoulder joint is articulated using a link member driven by a single revolute joint mounted in the torso structure. Passive adjustable linkages are used to match variation in anatomical forearm length, upper arm length, and scapula-to-glenohumeral radius. A plurality of integrated dc motor/harmonic drive transmission modules is co-located on adjoining linkages to power the joints. Force is exchanged with the human at the handgrip and elbow brace, and reacted to the torso structure via the base attachment. The present invention is applicable in particular to rehabilitation of the shoulder.
