A high torque limited angle compact and lightweight actuator that comprises a driven pulley (11), a flexible tie-member (6), which is wound about the driven pulley (11), a linear actuator (7) and an inversion mechanism (8). In particular, the linear actuator (7), which is located with respect to the driven pulley (11) such that the direction is substantially tangent to it, comprises a movable element (10) that carries out a linear movement along a line according to two opposite directions (10′), (10″). The inversion mechanism is such that when an input portion (8′) moves along a line (first straight line), tangential to the driven pulley, of a certain an amount a output portion (8″) moves along another line (second straight line), which is also tangential to the driven pulley, for a same movement amount, such that the total length of the tie-member (6) is unchanged. The invention relates to an autonomous system for determining items of information representative of the movement of an articulated chain (CA—1, CA—2, CA—3) comprising at least two solid elements (ES1—1, ES2—1, ES1—2, ES2—2, ES3—2, ES1—3, ES2—3, ES3—3, ES4—3) and at least one articulation (ART1—1, ART1—2, ART2—2, ART1—3, ART2—3, ART3—3) connecting said two elements. The system comprises at least two devices (DISP1—1, DISP2—1, DISP1—2, DISP2—2, DISP3—2, DISP1—3, DISP2—3, DISP3—3, DISP4—3) for measuring inter-device distances, mounted fixedly on two distinct elements of said articulated chain and suitable for transmitting the measurements made. Moreover, the system comprises means for determining at least one distance separating two measuring devices based on at least one measurement supplied by a measuring device, and calculation means (CALC), mounted on said articulated chain, suitable for calculating items of information representative of the movement of said articulated chain based on the measurements transmitted by said devices for measuring inter-device distances.

Wearable haptic devices with poor position sensing are combined with the Kinect depth sensor by Microsoft. A heuristic hand tracker has been developed. It allows for the animation of the hand avatar in the virtual reality and the implementation of the force rendering algorithm: the position of the fingertips is measured by the hand tracker designed and optimized for Kinect, and the rendering algorithm computes the contact forces for wearable haptic display. Preliminary experiments with qualitative results show the effectiveness of the idea of combining Kinect and wearable haptics.

In this paper we discuss plans initiated to develop and evaluate multisensory displays (i.e. visual, haptic, tactile) to support dismounted (i.e., not in vehicle) Soldier movement, communication, and targeting. Human factors studies of an array of military operational roles have shown significant demand for focal visual attention that diminishes the capacity for task-sharing and attention allocation, especially in the context of unexpected changes and events. If other sensory modalities can be effectively used in a military environment, the benefit could be significant in increasing survivability, information flow, and mission achievement. We discuss operational task demands and two efforts supported from a 2010 SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) topic.

The MRS NAP apparatus is disclosed for carrying marching percussion or other objects, particularly but not exclusively drums of various sizes and amalgamations and other objects carried at a person’s frontal area near waist height. The apparatus is worn about the user’s waist and the utility uses the person’s hips to bear the instrument’s load. Current state of the art places a majority of the load upon the shoulders and spine. The apparatus relieves the shoulder and spine of weight and pressure and also allows more upper body movement. The MRS NAP apparatus consists of an exoskeleton load bearing frame for a solid platform to hold the carried object stably, an endoskeleton padded for comfort, a vertical spinal column brace, and straps from the apex of the spinal column brace for stability of larger objects. The MRS NAP apparatus is adjustable for various consumers of diverse sizes.
