Хотя направленность скафандра была авиационная, приспособленная для длительных перелетов, учитывался тот факт, что на огромной высоте воздух становится разреженным, а давление скафандра будет таким, что руки и ноги потеряют гибкость, требуя посторонней помощи.
Изобретатель высказался в том смысле, что “до того, как станет поздно, необходимо внести улучшения в авиационные костюмы, которые должны быть не только безопасными, но и более комфортными”. Межзвездные путешествия (а это дело ближайшего будущего) требуют лучших скафандров для пилотов”.
Инженер упоминает два из семи своих требований, “легкость движений руками в вакууме” и “должны быть механические приводы, помогающие сгибанию конечностей в скафандре”. Для этого “есть идея гидравлических, механических или электрических приводов, направляющих и сгибающих конечности в костюме, руки и ноги”.
Эта идея была осуществлена 12 апреля 1961 года, когда русский Юрий Гагарин стал первым человеком в космосе, со времени подачи заявки на патент прошло около пяти лет. На сегодняшнее время нет доказательств, что этот патент был применен в данном случае. А в 1959 году Роберт Хайнлайн опубликовал свой “Звездный десант”.
